As Covid-19 continues to prevent us from rehearsing and performing in person, the Chorale is grateful to our families, friends, audiences, and donors for support and understanding. We wish everyone health, safety, and community during the continuing international pandemic.

During Covid-19 restrictions, we'll be sending brief biweekly email messages with links to Singer Sidebars, very short videos (usually two minutes or so) that introduce you to some of our singers, virtual performances, and more. Those videos will also be posted here on our homepage.

Virtual Concert

Christmas without singing is inconceivable. Whether your favorite Christmas music memories include symphony chorus performances of Handel's Messiah, hearing—or singing in—church choirs during a candlelit Christmas Eve service, or impromptu party caroling round the piano, we know song has been part of the season every year.

This year is different. Instead of our usual December performances, we're offering something closer to a sing-along around the piano at home--which is where we are. By inviting you into our homes for this virtual performance, we hope to share the warmth and cheer of the season in spite of physical distancing.

Of course, this isn't the first time that so many have been prevented from celebrating Christmas with loved ones. Since 1943, one popular song has embodied the wistful longing for togetherness this time of year. You can listen to our 2020 version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" by clicking the image below.

“Little Drummer Boy” in a recording from last years’s December Santa Fe concert.

“Little Drummer Boy” was written by composer and teacher Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941 and originally published as "The Carol of the Drum". It is one of the most beloved and widely recorded modern Christmas song, with over 200 versions in at least seven languages. The song has been covered by singers as varied as Bob Dylan, Blind Boys of Alabama, Kiri te Kanawa, and Justin Bieber(!).
First recorded by the Trapp Family Singers in 1951 as “Carol of the Drum”, the song was subsequently recorded in slightly different versions entitled "Little Drummer Boy" by the Jack Halloran Singers and Harry Simeone Singers, and Simeon (and his friend Henry Onorati) claimed joint composer credit with Davis.
The Chorale is glad to join those giving Davis the credit she is due as original composer.
