Celebrate Folk Songs!

A Message from Music Director Fred Graham

The folk song can invoke many moods and many styles of music.
On March 11 the Chorale will present a wide range of folk music that represents the cultures of Europe and the Americas with music from Serbia, the British Isles, and North, Central, and South America.

The inspiration for the concert is Cecilia McDowall’s celebration of British folk music in her A Fancy of Folksongs. This four-part work reflects love and courtship. McDowall notes, “The word ‘fancy’ features frequently in the vocabulary of young lovers. For me, it calls to mind Elizabethan times, when courtship rituals were the fashion and when the Fancy (the Fantasy) was a popular musical form.” It is just one of the works to show off our accompanist Deborah Wagner.

Debbie is joined by Nate Salazar for several duo piano works including a set of Scottish folk songs arranged by Mack Wilberg. This set was featured in my first concert with Chorale in 2018 and I am glad to return to them in my last concert with group. Additionally, the concert incudes popular American hymns and spirituals arranged by Alice Parker, Virgil Thomson, Undine S. Moore, and Jester Hairston, and some folk songs of Spain, Mexico and Venezuela. Finally, guest violinist Carla Kountoupes will be featured in our closing number, “The Nightingale.”

We are grateful to collaborate with Southwest Arts in presenting this program.
